Mission Motorsport sees action at this year’s Invictus Games

The Invictus Games has just been held in Germany for the very first time, and Mission Motorsport did not escape the action, with a member of staff and one of our Racemakers in the 59-strong Team UK.

Under the motto “A HOME FOR RESPECT” the city, together with the German Federal Armed Forces, welcomed over 500 competitors from 21 nations as well as around 1,000 family members and friends, to compete in ten disciplines. 20,000 people attended each night of the opening and closing ceremonies with 180,000 witnessing the sport action over the week.

Mission Motorsport team member and Army Reservist Jonny Ball competed in Powerlifting, Indoor Rowing and Cycling, picking up a Bronze medal in the former, as well as Personal Bests in the other two events.  He also was sports captain of the rowing team.

Jonny said, ‘For many, including me, sports recovery has not only been life changing, but life defining too.  Being on stage with the Union Flag draped across my shoulders and looking at my wife and little girl as I got my medal, is a memory that will stay with me forever.’

Our Racemaker was RAF Veteran Steve ‘Hoops’ Hooper who competed in Sitting Volleyball and Powerlifting.  Hoops was part of the volleyball team, 70% of whom had never played before, who narrowly missed out on a medal making it to the Semi Finals.

On reflecting on the impact of the Games he said, ‘I came home with a greater understanding of the journey I have been on, and the progress I have made, however big or small.  I also came home with a deeper appreciation for my family (which I didn’t think could get any more).’

Our CEO James Cameron, as an advisor to the Invictus Games Foundation, was also able to make it out to the Games, and had this message for Jonny and Hoops, ‘We at Mission Motorsport are incredibly proud of you both, to see how far you have come, and what this has meant to you and your families.  You are Invictus!’

Expressions of interest for the first ever hybrid Summer-Winter Invictus Games to be held in early 2025 in Vancouver-Whistler Canada are now being taken by the RBL, and we hope to see more of the Mission Motorsport apply and succeed as they have done here and in the past.
