World Suicide Prevention Day 2025
10 September 2025
Suicide is not inevitable. Together, we can save lives. Many veterans and their families know just how deeply these losses by suicide are felt. But suicidal thoughts can be interrupted — and reaching out can make a vital difference.
This World Suicide Prevention Day, we are sharing one important message:
If you think someone may be suicidal, act. Interrupt their thoughts. Show them you care.
Research with people who have lived experience of suicide shows:
60% said their suicidal thoughts were interrupted by someone close to them, such as a friend or family member.
14% said their thoughts were interrupted by a stranger or someone they didn’t know.
You do not need to be an expert to help. Small actions — checking in, asking directly, listening without judgement — can interrupt suicidal thoughts and save a life.
If you are struggling yourself, or worried about a fellow veteran, please know support is available:
Combat Stress 24/7 Helpline: 0800 138 1619 (for veterans and their families)
Samaritans: 116 123 or jo@samaritans.org (open 24/7, free, confidential)
Let’s prevent suicide today — because tomorrow may be too late.
